Everyone had high expectations from A R Rahman at the Oscars after he became the first Indian to win a Golden Globe award for his Background Score in Slumdog Millionaire. But not only has A R Rahman got an Academy Award Nomination but he has got 3 nominations at the Oscars with Best Music (Score) for Slumdog Millionaire, Best Music (song) for Jai Ho song of Slumdog Millionaire and Best Music (song) for O Saya song of Slumdog Millionaire. He has a very high chance of winning in both the categories. He has already won the Background Score at the Golden Globe Award which is regarded as a preview to the Oscars. And in the other category Best Music (song) he has got two nominations out of the three nominations in the category and will only need to compete with Peter Gabriel and Thomas Newman for their song “Down to Earth” in “Wall E”. In two of his nominations namely Best Music (song) for “Jai Ho” and Best Music (song) for “O Saya”, he shares the nomination with Gulzar (who has penned the lyrics of Jai Ho) and Maya Arulpragasam (who has penned the lyrics of O Saya with Rahman) respectively. Rahman was elated with the three nominations saying he had never expected three nominations but the “King of Indian Music” remained humble as ever. Rahman was with his family at his home in Chennai when the nominations were announced and he said that he was feeling on top of the world after the nominations. Rahman could not attend the Indian premiere of Slumdog Millionaire in Mumbai as he had to give the final touches to the musical score of Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra’s Delhi 6. He thanked all Indians for the love and prayers bestowed upon him. He also thanked all the technicians, musicians and all those who have been a part of his music throughout the years. He was grateful to God and he thanked the Almighty for his success. He also congratulated and thanked the whole team of Slumdog Millionaire and hoped that he might bring India’s first Oscar. The whole team of Slumdog Millionaire and the whole of Bollywood were also thrilled with Rahman’s nominations and Irrfan Khan (who was also part of the movie) said that he hoped A R Rahman wins one Oscar at least, lyricist Gulzar also said that A R Rahman should win an award while Hrithik Roshan simply bowed to show his respect to A R Rahman. There were many others like Shabani Azmi, Javed Akhtar, Ila Arun (who sung Ringa Ringa with Alka Yagnik), Sukhvinder Singh (who sung Jai Ho), filmmaker Yash Chopra, Anil Kapoor (who was the anchor of the show in the movie) and Preity Zinta who also congratulated A R Rahman for the nominations.
We all Indians also congratulate the versatile genius and hope that he brings at least one Oscar and if possible two. Jai Ho Rahman, Jai Ho Danny Boyle and Jai Ho Slumdog Millionaire.
Gulzar is regarded by many as probably Hindi cinema’s best lyricist till date and he has penned lyrics for many Bollywood films for the last four decades. Gulzarji has already won many awards in India (including 11 Filmfare awards) but his talent has now been internationally recognized as he has been nominated at the Oscars for the Song “Jai Ho” of Slumdog Millionaire. He wrote the lyrics of the song while A R Rahman composed the music (with whom he shares the nomination) and Sukhwinder Singh sung it. As we all know Sampooran Singh Gulzar or Gulzar as he is popularly known is a multi-talented figure who has shown his talent as a lyricist, director, dialogue writer, screenplay artist, actor amongst many other talents. But this is the first time that Gulzar’s talent has been recognized internationally with the Academy Award Nomination.
Gulzar was exhilarated at the nomination but he was humble as ever and told that he was more happy on A R Rahman’s nominations. He believed that A R Rahman should bag one Oscar at least and said he was not at all worried about his own Oscar chances. Great going Gulzarji and great going Slumdog Millionaire.
Resul Pookutty who is a sound mixer from Kerela has made it to the Oscars with an Academy Award Nomination for Sound Mixing for the movie Slumdog Millionaire. He shares this nominations with Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke for the same movie. Resul Pokutty has been a lesser known figure even in India (technicians in Bollywood movie hardly get any limelight ) but has been behind the sound of many Bollywood films like Ghajini, Saawariya, Gandhi My Father, Black, Bluffmaster, Dus Kahaniyan, Zinda and many others. He had won the Zee Cine Awards for Best Audiography for the Sanjay Dutt movie Musafir way back in 2004 and had never even had any other nomination since then. But this time around, Resul Pookutty’s hard work and dedication seems to have paid off as he got another nomination too at the prestigious BAFTA Film Award for Best Sound in Slumdog Millionaire and he also made it to the Hollywood’s Cinema Audio Society’s nominations. With all these nominatons, Resul Pookutty seems to have made his definite mark not only in India but internationally too.
Resul Pookutty was very emotional on hearing the nomination and he said he had not expected in the wildest dreams that he would get an Academy Award Nomination. He said it was absolutely unbelievable that he has got an Oscar nomination.
We all Indians wish that Resul Pookutty wins the Oscar too which will not only fulfill his dreams but also give him his due for the hard work he has done in the last 12 years in Indian cinema.
After an incredible show at the Golden Globes with four Golden Globes to its name, Slumdog Millionaire seems all set to sweep the Oscars too. The movie has now picked 10 Oscar nominations which is just next to the Hollywood biggie “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” with 13 nominations. However, most critics accept that Slumdog Millionaire’s chances at winning more Oscars are quite high as compared to Benjamin Button due to its great overall performance. The nominations were announced hours before the Indian premiere of the move in Mumbai. The whole of Slumdog crew were thrilled at the Oscar nominations and they started dancing in the premiere in Mumbai. The movie has released today and as I have seen the great movie (I have already written its review a week ago) I advise everybody to watch this great movie at the theaters. Great going Slumdog Millionaire and an awesome movie indeed. Here are the exact nominations in detail:
Producer : Christian Colson
Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire)
Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay)
Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire)
Best Music (Score)

Lets keep our fingers crossed and hope Slumdog Millionaire bags the most Academy Award wins this year. Great movie with an awesome script by an awesome director and hope it gets its due in the Oscars.
Chandni Chowk to China has proved one thing for sure. Mere publicity and star power in a movie cannot result in the success of a Bollywood movie. Akshay Kumar had left no stones unturned in the publicity of his movie Chandni Chowk to China which released last week. This was the first Indian movie to be produced by Warner Bros which is one of the top Hollywood production houses. The movie had a superstar in Akshay Kumar who had delievered successive hits for the last two years and had a big upcoming actress in Deepika Padukone whose was going through a very good phase in her career. CC2C had international premieres in the likes of Los Angeles, New York, Toronto and London and there was a huge amount spent on the publicity of the movie. However, as I had mentioned in my review a few days ago the movie terribly failed to its expectations. As I told in the review it was quite pathetic with no proper story binding it. The Indian masses have also echoed my feelings (I am a part of the Indian masses too ) and Chandni Chowk to China is doing far below expectations at the box office. It has not only been on a low in India but even overseas (it was released with 125 prints in the US). Indian audience worldwide has once again proved that we are all intelligent enough to judge a good film from a bad film and mere publicity cannot result in a film’s success.
According to boxofficeindia.com
Chandni Chowk To China as expected has fallen heavily across the country. The business on Monday was around 2.50 crore nett for all India. The first four days plus paid previews total stands at around 23.50 crore nett.
The film looks like making total revenues of around 45-50 crore with the Indian theatrical share being in the 20-22 crore region but Warner Brothers have invested around 65 crore in the film and are likely to lose 15-20 crore in their first big venture in India.
According to boxofficeindia.com, the overseas collections are as follows
Chandni Chowk To China grossed around 8.50 crore in the International markets over its first weekend. The film did 2 crore (£274,590) in United Kingdom, 3 crore in North America ($625,000) and around 3.50 crore in the other markets.
The opening was well below the huge opening taken by the last Akshay Kumar starrer Singh Is Kinng of around 14 crore.
Great job India for making Bollywood realize that a film cannot only sustain by virtue of publicity and star power. Hope that Bollywood directors would now think a hundred times before making a mindless movie.
There has been a lot of negative remarks lately in India about Slumdog Millionaire which mainly started after Amitabh Bachchan supposedly said that the movie had projected India as a “third world dirty underbelly” in his blog. But Big B has come out in the open and denied making any such comments on the movie. Amitabh said that the comments on his blog criticising the movie were made by others and not him. He said that he had just put up negative and positive opinions from other people about the movie just to generate a debate and nothing else. Amitabh Bachchan was quoted by the Daily Express as saying
What a colossal joke this is all turning out to be! Without reading the text of my blog or the purpose behind mention of ‘SlumDog’ an entire machinery of abuse has been directed towards me. Fact is – someone mentioned the film on my blog. Some expressed opinion for it, some against. And yes, they contained some strong assumptions. I merely put both of them up and invited debate.
The movie is a great movie and it was quite surprising to see the Bollywood megastar criticizing it. But Amitabh Bachchan has laid all doubts to rest by clarifying and menioning that he never criticized Slumdog Millionaire. On the other hand, Danny Boye, the director of Slumdog Millionaire recently said that the success of the movie is also due to Amitabhji. He said that Slumdog Millionaire is based on Kaun Banega Crorepati which was so popular only because it was hosted by Amitabh Bachchan. He also added that the scene where there is reference of Amitabh Bachchan in the movie has become one of the most acclaimed scenes in the movie.
Both Danny Boyle and Amitabh Bachchan have shown their humility and respect and I believe any Indian who has made negative remarks about this movie and instead watch it when it releases on January 23. The movie is going to stir every Indian and I advise everybody to watch this great movie without even a tinge of doubt. Great going Slumdog Millionaire and hope that Danny Boyle, A R Rahman and the whole Slumdog Millionaire achieves great success in India too.
Rajnikanth, the South Indian superstar is busy in the shooting of his next movie “Endhiran” with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as his female co-star. Rajnikanth is extremely popular in the South and his last movie Shivaji was a huge hit not only in the south but had a very good response all over India and abroad. This movie Endhiran is another huge budget movie and is mainly a science fiction film. The director S Shankar has now got a glass chamber-like structure created in order to shoot a song from the movie. Sources say that it took almost two weeks for the chamber to be created and a few shots from the song will be done there. The budget of this movie is supposedly around 140 crore rupees and it might be the most expensive movie made in India till date. In the movie, Rajnikanth plays a double role of a scientist and a robot. This might be another south movie which is expected to break many box office records.
Anil Kapoor and A R Rahman have been getting accolades worldwide due to the performance and music in their movie Slumdog Millionaire. However, it seems that they are facing a few problems in their own country with many people opposing the film saying it has depicted the wrong face of India. I have seen the movie and I guarantee that the movie does not depict India in the wrong manner. Danny Boyle, the director of the movie is a very noble person at heart and he would never even think of degrading India or any country for that matter. But another problem has surfaced even before the movie’s release in India on January 23. Tapeshwar Vishwakarma, general secretary of Slum-dwellers Joint Action Committee, has filed a defamation case against Anil Kapoor and A R Rahman alleging that the film Slumdog Millionaire has depicted slum-dwellers in a bad taste by using the title Slumdog and thereby calling Indian dogs. He also said that he has already approached the national and state human rights commission about it. While posting the case for hearing on February 5, chief judicial magistrate Raghvendra Kumar Singh directed Vishwakarma to produce evidence in support of his complaint.
It is indeed pathetic that many Indians do not realize and notice on what context any word is used. Even before the film has released in India many people (mostly uneducated people eager for fame) started lambasting it without even seeing how India has been portrayed in the movie. But many say all kinds of controversies are good for any movie and hope it would be the same for this movie too. I wish that this brilliant movie gets its due in India too as it has around the world.
Shekhar Suman has minced no words in lambasting Akshay Kumar’s recent movie Chandni Chowk to China. He not only said that he wasted his money in the movie but also said that Chandni Chowk to China is the worst film ever made in Indian history. He added that the film is not only disappointing and amateurish but offends one’s sensibility as well. He also said that January 16 (the day the film released) should be declared National Mourning in India, as it’s the day cinema died. He also said that Singh Is Kinng was illogical too, but it was at least entertaining. He even went to the extent to say that the film has been shot so amateurishly like a child with a handycam that too banally and that Akshay owes India a national apology. Although many celebrities have lambasted other movies which they did not like but perhaps a lambasting of any movie by a celebrity to this extent was never seen before.
It will go down as the worst film ever made in Indian history. What an utter waste of Rs 400 that I spent on my ticket. I want a refund of all Akshay films that I’ve seen. The film is not just disappointing and amateurish but offends one’s sensibility as well. I don’t think there has been a film as sad or horrible as CC2C this far! I declare January 16 (the day the film released) to be declared National Mourning in India, as it’s the day cinema died. I watched it at Cinemax’s Red Lounge and everyone was hooting and jeering. I am upset with Akshay for doing such a film. He’s lost it after seeing success. Akshay was better when he wasn’t in the race now his brains have turned topsy-turvy. I think Shah Rukh must be having the last laugh Akshay said somewhere that SRK’s not in the race but he (Akki) is already at the finishing line. Singh Is Kinng was illogical too, but it was at least entertaining. CC2C makes David Dhawan look like Satyajit Ray. The film has been shot so amateurishly like a child with a handycam that too banally. I tried to find moments which I could like action, romance, music but couldn’t! I have seen Akshay grow as an actor but he’s terrible in the film. It’s like winning the jackpot, losing it and starting from scratch again. I will migrate from this country if they do! It’s blasphemy to make a sequel. I am sure that the Warner Brothers execs are fighting amongst themselves wondering why they made such a film. I guess Nikhil and Akshay were too involved in the film and lost focus. I wouldn’t know whether to lambast him or run away in embarrassment. Akshay owes India a national apology. From a non-actor, he became such a good one. I had loved him in Namastey London. To give the devil his due, his comic timing in all his earlier films were fantastic, considering comedy is so difficult to do. CC2C is the last film one expected from him!
However, sources tell that a friend of Akshay said
Suman obviously went out of his way to trash it because his son Adhyayan’s film is up for release and he does not want any competition. Competition is good but now it is reaching unhealthy levels in the industry
Far below my expectations! Absolutely horrible! I had a lot of expectations from Chandni Chowk to China and I can say that I am highly disappointed. Akshay Kumar told Amitabh Bachchan during the London premiere that leave your brains at home. He also told recently in the movie’s promotion that all movie viewers should leave their brains at home while watching this movie and should watch it like a cartoon film. I just thought it was a joke and certainly this movie would be quite good with all the hype around it. But after watching the movie I would like to ask that if I was so dull to watch a movie like a cartoon then why would I waste my time and money by watching such a worthless movie. Would I not watch Tom and Jerry or any Disney cartoon at home. We can enjoy a movie and have fun but we cannot enjoy a senseless movie which does not have any worthwhile meaning.
This movie is perhaps Akshay’s most expensive movie till now and the movie is produced by one of the biggest Hollywood production houses Warner Bros. There were four international premieres of the movie and it was promoted as the Kung Fu comedy of Bollywood. This movie had the biggest release in US with supposedly 125 prints released all over US. But what were Nikhil Advani and Akshay trying to show to the western Indians. On one hand, a Hollywood director Danny Boyle makes an awesome movie (Slumdog Millionaire) from an Indian subject (with many Bollywood actors) increasing the stature of Bollywood while a Bollywood director Nikhil Advani makes a horrible movie after taking support from a huge Hollywood production house degrading the level of Bollywood. I really expected a lot from this movie and thought it would be an awesome action-comedy and it would be a great opening for Bollywood into the west. But I am really disappointed that this opportunity has been missed completely.
The movie is about Sidhu who lives in Chandni Chowk in Delhi and cuts vegetables and peels potatoes for a living. He prays to Ganpati Bappa to rescue him from such a life and tries different methods to get from his daily drudge. Then he abruptly gets the chance to go to China after two strangers from China claim him to be a reincarnation of their war hero. Then he goes to China where he finds Chopstick (Ranvir Shorey), Hojo (Gordon Liu) and Sakhi (Deepika Padukone). Then the messed up story continues till the end of 2 hours and 45 minutes when you repent for watching the movie. To cut short the movie is meaningless and there is no proper story. The movie has got good action by Bollywood standards but that is not enough to watch a mindless movie which does not even make us laugh. You might still remember the pathetic Salaam-E-Namaste by the same director Nikhil Advani and it seems that he has not improved till now and is till in the Salaam-E-Namaste mode.
Akshay said it in his interviews that the story of the movie was written only after Akshay and Nikhil decided to make the film. Nikhil is supposed to have got Akshay’s Kung Fu style poster got printed which he then showed to Akshay and then they decided to make the movie and write a story around it. But if there was no prior story (which is pathetic) before Akshay signed the movie, still a proper story could have been wrote around it. Akshay has to learn a lot from Aamir still on how to select a script based on a proper story. The writers Shridhar Raghavan and Rajat Aroraa have failed miserably with the movie’s script.
Akshay has done fair enough in the movie but unless you are a die hard Akshay fan I would advise you not to waste money and time on this movie. Instead wait for Slumdog Millionaire and Raaz The Mystery Continues next week which might be much better (Slumdog Millionaire is a million times better for sure). Chandni Chowk to China might do average business due to the movie’s hype. But I would not be surprised if it proves to be a debacle at the box office and 2009 starts with its first big flop.
I would give it a rating of 2/5.
