Oscar Nomination for reknowned Bollywood lyricist Gulzar

Gulzar is regarded by many as probably Hindi cinema’s best lyricist till date and he has penned lyrics for many Bollywood films for the last four decades. Gulzarji has already won many awards in India (including 11 Filmfare awards) but his talent has now been internationally recognized as he has been nominated at the Oscars for the Song “Jai Ho” of Slumdog Millionaire. He wrote the lyrics of the song while A R Rahman composed the music (with whom he shares the nomination) and Sukhwinder Singh sung it. As we all know Sampooran Singh Gulzar or Gulzar as he is popularly known is a multi-talented figure who has shown his talent as a lyricist, director, dialogue writer, screenplay artist, actor amongst many other talents. But this is the first time that Gulzar’s talent has been recognized internationally with the Academy Award Nomination.

Gulzar was exhilarated at the nomination but he was humble as ever and told that he was more happy on A R Rahman’s nominations. He believed that A R Rahman should bag one Oscar at least and said he was not at all worried about his own Oscar chances. Great going Gulzarji and great going Slumdog Millionaire.

Chandni Chowk to China fails heavily at the box office

Chandni Chowk to China has proved one thing for sure. Mere publicity and star power in a movie cannot result in the success of a Bollywood movie. Akshay Kumar had left no stones unturned in the publicity of his movie Chandni Chowk to China which released last week. This was the first Indian movie to be produced by Warner Bros which is one of the top Hollywood production houses. The movie had a superstar in Akshay Kumar who had delievered successive hits for the last two years and had a big upcoming actress in Deepika Padukone whose was going through a very good phase in her career. CC2C had international premieres in the likes of Los Angeles, New York, Toronto and London and there was a huge amount spent on the publicity of the movie. However, as I had mentioned in my review a few days ago the movie terribly failed to its expectations. As I told in the review it was quite pathetic with no proper story binding it. The Indian masses have also echoed my feelings (I am a part of the Indian masses too Chandni Chowk to China fails heavily at the box office ) and Chandni Chowk to China is doing far below expectations at the box office. It has not only been on a low in India but even overseas (it was released with 125 prints in the US). Indian audience worldwide has once again proved that we are all intelligent enough to judge a good film from a bad film and mere publicity cannot result in a film’s success.

According to boxofficeindia.com

Chandni Chowk To China as expected has fallen heavily across the country. The business on Monday was around 2.50 crore nett for all India. The first four days plus paid previews total stands at around 23.50 crore nett.

The film looks like making total revenues of around 45-50 crore with the Indian theatrical share being in the 20-22 crore region but Warner Brothers have invested around 65 crore in the film and are likely to lose 15-20 crore in their first big venture in India.

According to boxofficeindia.com, the overseas collections are as follows

Chandni Chowk To China grossed around 8.50 crore in the International markets over its first weekend. The film did 2 crore (£274,590) in United Kingdom, 3 crore in North America ($625,000) and around 3.50 crore in the other markets.

The opening was well below the huge opening taken by the last Akshay Kumar starrer Singh Is Kinng of around 14 crore.

Great job India for making Bollywood realize that a film cannot only sustain by virtue of publicity and star power. Hope that Bollywood directors would now think a hundred times before making a mindless movie.

Ghajini has been ringing the box office bells unceasingly since its release on Christmas. The movie has now crossed the 2 billion mark and has earned more than 200 crores worldwide in less than two weeks of its release. The movie has done exceptionally well in India as well as overseas. The gross earnings of Ghajini in India are 162 crore rupees as of now and its international earnings are 39 crore rupees. The movie is going to become the most successful Bollywood movie in India by crossing the earnings of Dulhania Le Jayenge (Rs 165 cr) and Gadar-Ek Prem Katha (Rs 170 cr). Going by the present trend Ghajini which has already made 162 crores should be able to gain the top spot within one or two days at the most. Ghajini might also become the most successful movie overseas with its overseas collections at 39 crores being only second to Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (44 crores) at the first position. That is called a sensational performance !

Box office collections is rock steadily for Ghajini with the Aamir Khan movie crossing 170 crores within ten days of its release. Ghajini has not only become the first Indian movie to cross the 100 crore mark but its collection has been rock steady even now. With no big release last week, it is not facing any tough competition and it is expected to rule the box office steadily till the release of Chandni Chowk to China starring Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone. Asin Thottumkal has also been appreciated for her excellent comic timing and she has already been flooded with several movie and advertisement offers. Lets wait and see if and when the Ghajini mania dies down. Congratulations to Aamir, Asin and Murugadoss for the movie which has carved out a new box office report in India.

Ghajini has created history by becoming the first Bollywood movie to cross the box office figure of one billion rupees within a week of its release in Christmas. It has already created the record for the first day earnings by crossing the first day earnings of Singh is Kinng and Om Shanti Om. The film broke all previous box office records though many were concerned if it would do well when India and the world is going through a period of recession. Aamir Khan who has proved himself and his worth in Bollywood once again with Ghajini also praised the director A R Murugadoss. Aamir said

I”m very happy and thankful that the film is being appreciated by the audience so much. The hard work put in by the entire team is being appreciated by the people

The lead actress Asin Thottumkal who also acted in the original Tamil version of Ghajini said

I don’t come with baggage or expectations. I just focus on my work. I thank you all for the love you have given

The movie has done exceptionally well in India as well as abroad and the box office cash meters are still running and it is expected to run for sometime with no big releases nearby. Great job Aamir and great going Ghajini !

Golmaal Returns and Fashion light up box office on Diwali

Golmaal Returns and Fashion were released on Diwali with a lot of expectations as there were no big crackers in the box office for sometime. And Diwali week is always regarded as a very good week to release movies as there has been good business on Diwali throughout the years. This time India is going through economic strains and so filmmakers and distributors were worried if movies would do good business inspite of the economic situation.

This year the box office has again responded well this Diwali. Both Golmaal Returns and Fashion opened with 80-90% occupancy in the first two days. While the distributors has revealed that Golmaal Returns grossed over Rs 11 crore in the first day itself and Fashion earned 7 crore. The best part is that Golmaal Returns and Fashion are targetted at different audience groups and so will not be affecting each others business. Golmaal is already a sure shot hit and might be even a superhit if it sustains in the second week. Fashion is doing well in multiplex audiences in the metros and it is picking up very good after a slow start. It seems Diwali 2008 might even be better than Diwali 2007 in terms of box office collections although there are no huge films like Om Shanti Om and Sawariya like 2007.
